Harnessing Wave Energy – Drakoo Started Second Round of Sea Trial

24/02/2023

On February 21, 2023, an exciting news came from Shengsi archipelago, that Hann-Ocean Energy's third-generation wave energy generator Drakoo had been successfully launched for the second round of six-month sea trial, aiming to improve the stability and reliability of its operation at sea. The launch took more than four hours, with the construction site staff seizing every minute and second to overcome the harsh weather of high winds, fog and tides and finally achieved a complete success.

The Drakoo wave energy generator was independently researched and developed by Hann-Ocean Energy (Zhoushan) and was fully upgraded after its first round of sea trial. This 20-ton generator is shaped like an oversized matchbox. It is also referred to as a " power bank on the sea", which is a sight to behold at the wharf. Drakoo is capable of capturing the energy contained in wave oscillations and sways and is expected to generate up to 70,000 kWh of power annually. It has been granted national patents in many countries and regions for its advantages of high energy conversion efficiency, small size, low cost and easy scalability.

The first-round sea trial of Drakoo started on 8th of January 2022 and completed on 15th of July 2022. In the five and a half months since then, Hann-Ocean's R&D team has made 21 technical modifications to the equipment to address the challenges identified in the first round of sea trial that needed to be solved in the real sea. For example, in response to the problem that there is a lot of sediment in seawater, which caused the severe wear of bearings and mechanical equipment, a five-layer filtration system was made; in response to the problem of the excessive growth of marine organisms, they used bionic flexible environmental protection paint to prevent marine organisms from attaching; in response to the problem of anti-corrosion of key parts, ceramic bearings were innovatively used to extend the service life, etc.

The second launch of Drakoo has also attracted a lot of attention, with Zhejiang TV and Zhoushan TV coming to the site for interviews. In the interview, Henry L. Han, managing director of Hann-Ocean Energy, shared the important discovery made by his R&D team after analysing the power generation data collected over the past six months, that the wave generator could generate electricity with 0.2m wave height under actual sea conditions, which originally required 0.3m wave height when tested in the wave tank. "The real sea tests have collected valuable data for us that would not have been available in the laboratory." Henry said, "The commercialization of each product may undergo numerous tests in the laboratory and in the real environment. " The second round of sea trial of Drakoo is of great significance, as it will provide data to support future large-scale commercial applications and further improve the performance of the product. Henry also mentioned the comprehensive development model of wave energy and offshore wind power, and said that in the context of "carbon peaking and carbon neutrality", ocean energy is a major direction for Zhejiang to develop multiple forms of renewable energy.

So far, Drakoo has been conducting sea trial in Shengsi for over nine months and has set a record of generating 600 watts at the minimum wave height of 0.1 meter, with a maximum output of 8.4kW, and has withstood the test of 2.4m waves.
